Abstract

The article provides a theoretical and applied interpretation of the concept of «existence within a system of established constraints» as applied to the Russian baking industry. Unlike interpretations of industrial stagnation or crisis, the proposed category captures a stable reproduction mode in which an enterprise maintains regular output, fulfils obligations and preserves market presence but does not generate sufficient resources for expanded reproduction. Based on the author’s monograph, it is shown that this mode is formed under the influence of five structural barriers: the price corridor, bargaining asymmetry with retail chains, raw-material volatility, labor shortages and investment starvation. A diagnostic scheme is developed to distinguish managed survival, stagnation, degradation and crisis according to operational, financial and organizational criteria. The practical significance lies in using the model to select exit strategies: specialization, integration or a technological leap.
